Year 12 Chemistry Day

11 January 2023

Last week, our Science department organised an off-timetable day for our Year 12 students so they could delve deeper into Chemistry practical work, ahead of their A Level exams. They learnt how to measure the enthalpy of combustion and how to make a halogenoalkane. As well as this, they practised critically analysing their experiments.

“The Year 12 Chemistry Day provides a wonderful opportunity for students to spend time in the lab, focusing on their practical skills.

The first session involved preparing and purifying a halogenoalkane from alcohol, learning how to use organic chemistry glassware and experiencing the unique smells that come with organic work!

The second session looked at calculating the enthalpy change of combustion using a range of alcohols. The focus here was on learning how to analyse and evaluate their data, which is vital to any scientific work.

We are incredibly proud of the way students got stuck in, and hope that they had as much fun as we did!” Dr Regardsoe, Head of Science
