Trip to New York and Washington

31 October 2022

During half term, students across Year 12 and Year 13 had the opportunity to go beyond their classroom and experience the places and cultures they learn about in Sixth Form.

A total of 57 Year 12 and 13 students accompanied by 7 staff went on an Economics, Politics and Psychology trip to New York and Washington DC. From a Psychology of terrorism workshop delivered by a leading global expert, to a tour and talk, from the United Nations and from the White House, to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the students had a varied and packed programme. Whether it was sombre museums such as the Holocaust Museum and the 9/11 Memorial and Arlington Cemetery and the Lincoln and other memorials, or whether it was fun-based activities from a New York Knicks basketball game at Madison Square Garden, to a singing diner (you had to be there), or the Broadway Show, the students immersed themselves in the full experience of both cities.

They enjoyed views from the top of the One World Center and the Washington Monument, visited the World Bank and went to a university seminar on Forensic Psychology. They had talks from a leading UK Diplomat in Washington DC and a high-ranking reputational manager and former student in New York. Above all, the students were fantastic in their willingness to go the extra mile quite literally in their appreciation of this week-long trip.  Thank you to staff, Ms Burton, Mrs Chipchase, Mrs D’Souza-Eva, Mr Gilbert and Ms Hughes who accompanied the pupils and to all 57 students with whom we were lucky to share such a fun adventure and two of our birthdays!

Our pupils commented:

“Whirlwind of a trip crammed full of activities from a New York Knicks game to the more reflective museums and memorials, I enjoyed every second.”

“I will never have such a busy week of my life again; an incredibly busy week – just what I wanted.”

“The visits on the trip were incredible and we’re all extremely lucky to have had such a rounded and well-organised trip. I would recommend it to anyone in the younger years at school. Thank you hugely to the teachers.”

Ms Dass and Mr Gallacher said:

It’s been wonderful to see our students out on trips across the globe, especially post-Covid!
