Head’s Awards

12 July 2023

Today, we gathered in the Main Hall for our Head’s Awards, which honours all of the individual successes over the last academic year. It was a great opportunity for us to celebrate all of our amazing pupils.

Head’s Awards are given for exceptional performance in any area: academic, pastoral or co-curricular.  This half term, Head’s Awards are given to the following:

Congratulations to Phoebe R (9S) and Thalia K (8H) who have both achieved the Royal College of Church Music Gold Award. This is the highest award for choral singing given by the RSCM.

Maria C 7S and Aneesa Z (7H) both receive a Head’s Award for playing some outstanding tennis in the U18 GDST Doubles Tennis Rally and finishing 4th in their section. Excellent team work and co-operation both on and off court. Well done!

Emma R (S4) has been a constant support to the Drama Department this academic year. She has led the Wardrobe team for the Lower School Play in the Autumn Term and both full scale school productions, single-handedly costuming 70 cast members for ‘Matilda’ performances. Thank you, Emma.

Sophia T (7S) is commended for superb year-round achievement in Latin.

Sophia is dedicated, committed, extremely hard-working and focused in lessons. She scored 100% in her end of year test, with an impeccable translation and not a single mistake.

Congratulations to Valerie Li (9H) on coming first in the U15 England Youth Fencing Championships.   A huge success! Well done.

Emily Y (10S) has won a prize for being selected as the winner of her category (Y10 and 11) of the Flash Fiction Competition in French  – organised by the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford. She had to send a *very* short story (no more than 100 words) written in French.

The panel of academic judges assessed stories on their imagination and narrative flair, as well as linguistic accuracy.  Congratulations to Emily.

Head’s Awards are given to Alice J (S6) , Amelia J(S3) and Charlotte J (S5) for editing ‘The Sunflower’ throughout the year, encouraging others to take part, and generating interesting and relevant copy.  Thank you to you all.

Hailey W (9O) successfully auditioned for a place at the Royal College of Music Junior Department. Admission to this is highly competitive, and is awarded to students who show the potential to go on to successful professional careers in Music. Normally the Head of the RCMJD gives herself a few days to consider her decision before awarding a place. When Hailey auditioned, she offered her a place on the spot!

Well done to Emily M (S8) and Ailin Z (S1) on becoming rowing National Schools Champions in the Women’s Four. A superb achievement and testament to all your hard work and training throughout the year. Emily is currently doing GB rowing trials and is a strong contender for a place in the team for international racing over the summer

Ida B (9S), Millie (10O), Ariana M (8S), Sophie Y (8G) and Suri Y (7S) were all selected to dance in Swan Lake by the English Youth Ballet.  Ms Phipps watched the performance and thought you danced so beautifully; congratulations also to Ida who danced in such a prominent role!

Lucinda J (9S) receives a Head’s Award for her dedication to the cause of climate change by giving talks to Years 7 to 10. She has shared a wealth of knowledge, advice and her own experience in four thought-provoking talks which put her out of her comfort zone. These will enable others to consider their viewpoints and hopefully take some practical action towards change.  Thank you, Lucinda.

Isla S (8O) competed at the National Young Stars Ice Skating Competition in Sheffield and finished in second place, gaining the silver medal, with another personal best.  Congratulations!

Lizzie Z (S2) has recently competed in International Cheerleading Competitions with her team over in Florida, finishing 4th overall in the world. The team also finished two times European Champions as well. Absolutely incredible! Emma Lackenby also competed in the World Cheerleading Championships; her team finished in the top ten internationally.  A fantastic performance from you both!

Mulan S (S3) is recognised for achieving a Grade 8 Distinction in her LAMDA speech and drama exam, which was taken outside OHS. Well done to you, Mulan.

Head’s Awards go to Tilly H (S1) Alice M (S5) and Katharina M (S1) for producing an outstanding Conrad Challenge science and business project, which enabled them to reach the global finals of the competition.  They won awards for marketing and engagement with the scheme out of all 20 teams.

Sophia T (7S) has gone well above and beyond her Circus Scratch computer game programming project. She has used Scratch independently to complete a fully immersive and engaging platform game with 5 levels of difficulty and over 35 levels with a variety of challenges. These featured friendly-looking but devious crocodiles, an underwater maze and a wicked witch to overcome at the end. The design of the artwork, sound, graphics and animation was of professional standard. Well done, Sophia!

Charlotte C (Y9) competed in the English Schools National Athletics competition in the 1500m for Y8 and Y9 participants. It was a huge achievement to be selected for this prestigious event, congratulations Charlotte!

Congratulations to all of our students who received awards this year.
