A Russian Bake-Off

4 February 2022

To celebrate reaching the end of the topic of Russian Food, Year 9 Russianists have had the chance to explore authentic Russian cake recipes and put them into practice.

Many students challenged themselves by making the famous Russian layered cake called medovik or honey cake, which takes at least 3 hours to make! Some students exercised not only their baking skills but also their humour and wit; we could not stop dipping into the Russian chocolate salami and taking a bite from a famous Putin and the bear meme cake. The Russian-inspired toffee spread aka ‘Iris’ was a real hit! Pancakes with salmon truly brought us all to Russia for the forthcoming Maslenitsa (pancake week) and it was a real crime to eat the matryoshka cake, as it deserved to be in a museum and not on our plates.

All cakes were beautifully executed and finger-licking good. The bake-off was judged by a team of experts consisting of teachers and Sixth Form students who were amazed at the creativity and skill of our Russianists.

The winner will be announced by the end of half term. Watch this space!
