The Aluminium D&T Challenge 2016

26 January 2017

Big congratulations go to our Design and Technology department, led by Chris Phillips. Seven OHS girls have just found out that they were shortlisted as finalists in the 2016 Aluminium D&T Challenge. Schools from all around the UK enter teams from Years 8 and 9 and the girls must use design research techniques to develop practical solutions to problems set in an Aluminium D&T Challenge. The briefs required the girls to consider the use of aluminium in their designs and the end of life impact that the designs would have on the environment. The Year 8 girls developed a hydrogen powered small vehicle, which could be used by a disabled person, with sliding seats and doors and keyless entry. Our Year 9 girls developed a green roof building designed for a photographer with built in solar panels. Both year groups produced information packs explaining their designs and justifying the use of their proposed materials. They also constructed scale models to replicate the designs that they produced.

The Judges sent their congratulations to the girls who took part in the Challenge, and encouraged them to continue to develop their talent for creative thinking and design. Our finalists will receive a 3Doodler pen and certificate each and, if they are eventually selected as a winner, will be invited to a special Celebration Event in Birmingham on 8th March 2017.
