Head, Marina Gardiner Legge, congratulates “an excellent group of leaders, who worked hard, expanded their horizons and supported the whole student body in emerging into a complex but navigable world.”
Thursday 17th August, 2023: Today, Oxford High School GDST A Level students congratulated each other on impressive results; the culmination of years of study, collaboration and creativity.
- 85% of Oxford High School GDST A Levels were graded A*- B. Furthermore, 37% of pupils were awarded three or more As and A*s.
- All Oxford High students who undertook A Levels in Computing, French, Russian and Geography gained As and A*s.
- 10% of Oxford High School GDST A Level students will be going on to study at Oxbridge.
Oxford High School GDST has a strong track-record for excellent exam results, as was reflected in its recent ISI inspection report, the inspectors noted the “consistent pattern of strong academic attainment, with many pupils attaining results above those expected on entry”. This year’s A Level results continued that pattern.
Moreover, the school’s pastoral provision – again, highlighted in the recent inspection: “an atmosphere of mutual pleasure in working to achieve success” – means that students will continue to benefit from ongoing intensive pastoral support as they navigate the emotionally-intensive exam result period.
The diverse, progressive and ambitious decisions of Oxford High School GDST’s A Level students are reflected in the variety of choices they’ve made about what to move on to next, ranging from Anthropology to Computing & Artificial Intelligence. A sustained area of strength for the school is students going on to study Medicine. Alice, Eunsong (also a Prefect), Anna and Saachi (also a House Leader and County-level Cricketer) have all accepted offers to study Medicine.
Demonstrating Oxford High School and its students’ strengths in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine) subjects, university places have been offered and successfully accepted for subjects such as Computer Science and Environmental Geoscience. The Arts remain a strong area too, with several students heading off to Art Foundation courses. The wide range of Languages offered at Oxford High School is represented exceptionally, with pupils going on to study for degrees in French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Russian and Classics.
Together with their exam success, Oxford High School’s A Level students have delivered numerous successes within (and beyond) their school life, for example:
- Sophia, who has accepted an offer to study Graphic Design at the University of the West of England Bristol, published a children’s book, ‘The Worry Wasp’, which she wrote and illustrated in its entirety in 2022. The book is designed to support young children in dealing with social anxiety and can be found on Amazon.
- Hebe has accepted an offer to study Classics at Cambridge. Her path became clear when she won two essay competitions with St John’s College, Oxford and the Classical Association.
- Groups of Oxford High School GDST students organised virtual conferences, inviting fellow students from across the UK and beyond to attend – resulting in more than 5,000 attendees. Conference topics included Current Economic Theory, Middle East and North Africa and Engineering.
Miss Pallas-Brown, Director of Sixth Form said, “I’m incredibly proud of our students in this year group. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, their A Levels were the first formal examinations they had undertaken and they took on that challenge, thanks to their resilience and support of each other. Our Sixth Form is a friendly, inclusive and stimulating environment where students flourish academically and develop their individual talents and potential. I want to wish all of our A Level students well with their futures.”
Mrs Gardiner Legge, Head of Oxford High School GDST, said, “These results are a testament to the support, opportunities, and experiences we offer to the bright and the ambitious. I am so grateful to all our staff, our parents and everyone in our community who has worked so hard to support them. This year group has faced such challenges in their education, more than many generations before them. They are an excellent group of leaders, who worked hard, expanded their horizons and supported the whole student body in emerging into a complex but navigable world. They also happen to be great people too. Congratulations to them all.”
