140 students from OHS signed up for tickets to watch England v Austria in the opening game of the Women’s European Football Championships on Wednesday 6th at Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United. We were delighted with how many students (and parents) were so keen to attend what was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, especially given the 2:30am return time!
Old Trafford had a sell out crowd, a first for women’s football in England and a real moment in history for women’s sport, and we are so lucky to have been part of that. The students were all in high spirits on the journey to Manchester, dressed in their England attire, faces painted and there was a huge buzz about what was to come. As we arrived in Manchester, we navigated getting all the students safely into the stadium, and they were fantastic at keeping with their group despite the want to stop at every memorabilia stall going!
As we stepped out into the stadium, the noise hit us, with the pre-match opening ceremony getting underway which was absolutely incredible. The game got underway and whilst England weren’t firing on all cylinders just yet, they did give us plenty to cheer about and one goal to celebrate too! The atmosphere in the crowd was electric; many a song was sung and many a well-mannered football chant chanted!
What an occasion! A big thank you to all the students who went on the trip for being so fantastic at such a big and busy event.
