We continued our STEM seminar series last Friday as we welcomed Professor Cathy Ye from the University of Oxford, who spoke about her involvement in the field of regenerative medicine as a chemical engineer.
Professor Ye started out her academic journey in the sciences with a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Dalian University of Technology, China. She then made the switch to the study of tissue engineering for her PhD in Oxford, which she continues to investigate for her research.
The talk was nothing short of insightful and educational as Professor Ye spoke about a myriad of topics in this widely researched field. Discussions were had about stem cell therapy, tissue engineering, some real-life cases of these practices, their principles and scientific process, and the uses of tissue engineering not only in medicine and healthcare but also for creating more environmentally-friendly eating habits and farming practices.
The event came to a close with a Q&A session. From questions about the ethical complications of using stem cells to the effects of stem cell therapy on blood donations, it was fantastic to witness how engaged our students were.
Thank you, Professor Ye!
