Skills for Success: Careers Evening

2 February 2024

On Thursday 1st February, we hosted our annual careers event to equip students with skills for success. Open to students from Years 10 to 13, the evening aimed to demystify career choices and empower attendees with insights and connections crucial for their journey beyond OHS.

Panel Discussions

One of the event’s highlights was the series of panel discussions featuring professionals from various industries, which included skills for clinical professionals, creative and media careers, studying abroad, finance and entrepreneurship, and skills for the future.

These engaging sessions allowed students to gain insights into different career paths, understand the day-to-day realities of various professions and learn about the educational and skill requirements for each. Hearing success stories from accomplished individuals, such as scientists, CEOs and writers, encouraged students to pursue their passions and work towards achieving their dreams.

Networking Opportunities

The Careers Evening provided a unique chance for students to connect with professionals through informal networking sessions. Students practised the skills they developed in sessions with Mrs Heath, our Head of Careers, to network with successful alumnae and industry experts. These interactions not only helped students build confidence and a professional network but also provided potential mentorship opportunities as they navigated their academic and professional journeys.

Higher Education & Careers Fair

Apprenticeship, higher education and other career providers set up a stall in the Dining Hall to answer questions and discuss opportunities. The selection included PC Riley Stokes and his team from Thames Valley Police, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the University of Bath, our school caterers Thomas Franks, and Melanie Moorhouse from the University Guys among many more. By hearing directly from professionals in various fields, students gained realistic expectations and a deeper understanding of the paths available to them.

Overall, the Careers Evening proved to be a resounding success, offering students a wealth of information, insights and inspiration. By fostering connections and showcasing diverse career paths, the evening is crucial in preparing students for the challenges and opportunities in their careers.

We want to thank all speakers and stallholders for joining us. Your valuable insight and advice to our students is very much appreciated, we hope to welcome you back to Oxford High School soon.
