The week before last, our fantastic Drama Department and students put on a show so overflowing with energy, enthusiasm and spark, that even the most ardent naysayer of musicals wouldn’t have been able to resist tapping their toes and singing along. The first OHS Lower School Musical since 2019, this epic production of High School Musical featured 100 students in all manner of roles, from acting and stage management to wardrobe, music and technical production.
Running for three nights between 29th June and 1st July, the production had a phenomenal turnout, and an even more phenomenal reception. The explosive energy on stage was only matched by that of the audience, as they eagerly followed the adventures and antics of Troy, Gabriella and the whole gang. One thing is for sure – we were all dazzled by the incredible talents and commitment of all of the students involved.
From Isabella, who played Gabriella:
“Being a part of the cast for High School Musical this year has been an honour and a fantastic opportunity. I was so excited just to be in it and have the experience of being in a proper Oxford High School production. I remember when I was reading the cast list and I got Gabriella. I was so happy and ecstatic, and my friends were all so happy and excited for me!
Rehearsals for the show were a crazy experience. It was a big commitment, but I am so happy I auditioned for it. It was so fun and weird because it has been so long since we have been able to do a production at this scale of the lower school and I have made so many friends in the other years. Playing the part of Gabriella was such a fun experience and I loved the stress and the fun of all of it. Tonight is our closing night and I am going to miss doing it so much.”
We would also like to say a big ‘well done’ to Rose N and her Year 9 team for running the interval bake sale and raising £124.00 for MindOut – what an incredible result!
Congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic production, particularly our wonderful students and Drama Department. We are certain that everyone involved in the show, whether as a participant or member of audience, will have memories to last a lifetime.
