Languages Festival

30 September 2022

To celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the European Day of Languages the Modern Foreign Languages Faculty organised a wide range of activities throughout the last week of September.

On Monday some students took part in an Oktoberfest baking workshop when they baked a traditional Viennese pastry popular throughout Austria and Germany. On Tuesday the Italian department had organised a session about Italy’s World Heritage and on Wednesday the Chinese department offered a traditional Chinese dance session. For those who enjoy singing more an Italian Karaoke was also an option that day.

On Thursday we welcomed Annalisa Brusati a former OHS student who is currently the Child Protection Senior Advisor for the International Rescue Committee. She spoke to Y11 students about the importance of learning foreign languages at GCSE, A Level and beyond.

Students could also attend several taster lessons in languages not taught at OHS. The choice was between Arabic, Korean, Bosnian, Japanese, Welsh, Sign Language and even Ukrainian. It was fantastic to see students and staff sharing a little bit about their home language and culture.

Friday was the International Day of Translation. Every year group engaged in translation activities during their language lessons. The Russian department had also organised a traditional Russian doll making workshop for that afternoon, and it was also possible to attend a Salsa lesson at lunchtime.

This evening, the German department will take some students to Radley College for a Quiz night which was fun and competitive.

Most students engaged in these activities, and it was a fantastic opportunity to show how dear learning languages and discovering new cultures are to our community.
