Interview with Year 7s

18 March 2022

With all of the new opportunities and aspects of school life to enjoy, Year 7 is undoubtedly a very exciting time for a student. In this piece, we interview some of our current Year 7s to find out how they’ve been getting on in their first year at the Senior School.

What has your experience of Year 7 been like so far?

Martha – My experience of Year 7 has been great and very chaotic! It has been really fun, and I have enjoyed most of it. It has been quite hectic, but you get used to it quickly!

Flossie – Year 7 so far has been fantastic and I have really enjoyed it!

What have been the main differences between Year 6 and Year 7 in your opinion?

Martha – You are a lot busier in Year 7 and there is so much more homework. It’s also a lot more chaotic and there is a lot more responsibility.

Flossie – So far I have made many new friends with different backgrounds and stories. You definitely have more choices in what you do compared to Year 6 and I’ve tried to experience as much as I can.

Louisa – The main difference is the homework you get as in Year 7 you get a lot more. However, you do get used to it and adjust to a certain routine a week.

What is your favourite subject and why?

Martha – Circus, especially Textiles and Drama. I love Circus because you rotate, so you are never doing the same thing for long. Textiles and Drama are my favourite as they both offer such creative freedom.

Flossie – I love Maths, as maths is in nearly everything and I find it very interesting. My teacher is always making sure we are taking things in and if we don’t understand then he will go over it with us.

Louisa – My favourite subject is Circus which is where each half term you rotate a circus which is can be either Art, Art 3D, Drama, Textiles or Computing. I love it because you get to be really creative and artistic.

What is your best memory of Year 7 so far?

Martha – Performing in the Dress Rehearsal of Beauty and the Beast (even if we weren’t in the final performance!). It was so magical to be on stage in front of all the Year 6s.

Flossie – I think making so many friends and exploring new subjects like Mandarin, Textiles and Latin.

What has been your favourite activity/experience in Year 7 so far?

Martha – A netball match against Headington. It was a home game, and we drew 8 all. It was a fabulous experience.

Flossie – My favourite experience so far has been my cricket match  (Lady Taverners U13) which was based at St. Helen & St. Katharine.

Have you got involved in any new extra-curricular activities since starting Year 7?

Martha – Lots of clubs, including Lower School Orchestra and Choir, and both musicals. I also play an instrument and do speech and Drama.

Flossie – There are so many extra-curricular activities – in the week I go to Debate Club, Cricket Club, Page Turners and Football! The extra clubs are really enjoyable as they are a time to relax with friends! The school also provides a wide range of different instruments you can learn.

What one piece of advice would you give to next year’s Year 7s?

Martha – Start the year organised, and the year will stay organised. And keep your locker tidy!! They will help you organise yourself do you never forget homework.

Flossie – I think so far I have learnt to make friends, always do your homework as it will help you understand more in the long run and sign up for everything!

Louisa – I have really enjoyed the extra-curricular activities because they welcome all abilities in every club. I really enjoy netball club and all the matches we do.
