For our latest Ada Benson lecture, we were joined by travel writer and broadcast journalist, Simon Parker.
Calling in from a BnB in Penzance, having just finished a mammoth 29-day bike ride from Shetland to Land’s End earlier that very day, Simon regaled us with his travel tales and adventures from around the world.
His passion for telling stories and ‘just say yes’ attitude to life have seen him visit over half of the countries in the world already, reporting for some of the UK’s biggest media outlets, including the BBC and the Telegraph.
Amongst the stories and memories recounted, which took us from the Inca ruins of Peru to the frozen landscapes of Svalbard and everywhere in between, we heard about one particularly impressive venture in which Simon sailed 7,000 nautical miles across the North Pacific Ocean. Though an incredible achievement, Simon freely admits that it was the ‘toughest month of his life’.
Following the lecture, there was an opportunity for questions, and it was wonderful to see so much engagement from our OHS students, many of whom took the opportunity to pick Simon’s brains for advice about breaking into the competitive world of journalism.
Thank you, Simon, for delivering such an interesting and thought-provoking lecture. We hope that all of our students, staff and parents enjoyed it!
