Last week, we held another incredible student-led conference – this time, regarding careers in law. The brainchild of Ella in Year 13, it was remarkably attended by over 80 schools and around 1,200 students.
A popular career among OHS students, the conference saw a superb line-up of speakers. Starting off the conference, we heard from Ian Gray (Executive Partner and Chairman of Eversheds Sutherland, Europe) who gave an inspirational talk about taking on opportunities wherever they are from and whatever background you are from. We then welcomed Caspar Glyn QC (specialist in employment relationship and sports law) who gave some powerful comments about how diverse barristers are now, how to succeed as a barrister, and the rewards and competitive side associated with becoming a barrister.
We were very excited to welcome Ayesha Vardag QC, who is named as ‘Britain’s top divorce lawyer’. An OHS alumna, Ayesha spoke about her journey and experiences in the field of law. We were also delighted to hear from former OHS students Roisin and Tiyash, both currently Law students, as they went into more detail about the law conversion course, and provided valuable advice about taking risks and grasping opportunities.
Our next speaker, Sally Davies (London Managing Partner at Mayer Brown) delivered an inspiring talk about the opportunities and difficulties she faced, sharing her energetic approach to leadership and imposter syndrome. Sally is also a GDST alumna, hailing from Shrewsbury High School.
We were very pleased to see another familiar face, as the next speaker was OHS alumna Mina-Marie Doherty. Currently a trainee at MJ Hudson, Mina-Marie shared fantastic insight into the pathways into a career in law, and the pros and cons of a law degree vs a law conversion course.
The following speaker, Michael Wolkind QC, is known as one of the UK’s top criminal trial and appeal barristers. Michael delivered an exciting and insightful talk as he shared some of the cases he has dealt with.
Wrapping up the day, we welcomed Christine Agnew QC. Christine is ranked in the Legal Directories as a leader in Financial Crime, Health & Safety, and General Crime. It was wonderful to hear Christine’s honest advice about what it takes to be a criminal barrister, and what a tough yet rewarding career it is.
Many congratulations and a huge well done to Ella for devising a truly phenomenal and inspirational conference!
