Year 9 and the Black Country

6 November 2015

Year 9 went to the Black Country Living Museum recently and the girls thoroughly enjoyed going back in time to the Victorian period. As part of their course on the Industrial Revolution, the girls discovered how new inventions and processes changed the lives of working men, women, boys and girls in the Black Country. They went down a coal mine to see how the coal was mined and transported, and went on a stunning canal trip through caves to learn about how the canals connected workers to the limestone they were quarrying.

Their visit also involved getting a writing lesson, Victorian-style, with a couple of students who struggled to recite the alphabet backwards being given the ‘cane’! After the stress of a strict classroom environment, the girls were able to unwind and have some fun on the Victorian fairground rides.

Year 9 certainly embraced the day and learnt so much about living and working conditions during the Industrial Revolution.
