OHS musicians have certainly been busy during the past few weeks, with the school community treated to two astounding concerts: the Year 7 Concert and the Lower School Concert.
Last Thursday, we had the incredible opportunity to listen to several of our Year 7 musicians, and it’s wonderful to witness their musical talents at this young age. We heard plenty of fantastic piano pieces, with Emma performing Vivace by Telemann, Hannah with Moonbeams by Arens, and Merkel playing Mariage d’amour dream by de Senneville and Toussaint. The clarinet also proved to be a popular instrument, with some brilliant music from Emilia playing Fantasistyk No. 4 by Gade, and Lexi who gave us Clarinet sonata mvt 2: Allegro animato by Saint-Saens. On the violin, we were in awe with Clotilde playing Preludio and Allemanda from Sonata by Vivaldi, and Thalia gave a captivating performance as she sang Be Thou My Vision by Chilcott. Flo and Anisha provided us with a slightly different version of Arens’ Moonbeams, this time as a flute and piano duet, and the concert concluded with a trio performance of Gounod and Bach’s Ave Maria by Olivia (violin), Angela (cello), and Thalia (piano). What a delightful afternoon it was, and a huge well done to these outstanding musicians!
From one concert and on to another, such is the plethora of opportunities for our musicians to practise and demonstrate their talents. Earlier this week, the Music Department put on a spectacular Lower School Concert on Tuesday evening. The concert started off with a very fitting performance of Mussorgsky’s The Great Gate of Kiev by the Lower School Orchestra. We then heard some truly magnificent music from our Clarinet Ensemble, String Quartet, Vocal Quartet and Chamber Choir, as well as from solos, duos and trios. We even had an original guitar piece from Rhea in Year 7, and a fun and colourful surprise from our Year 9 musicians! Thank you to Dr Foster and to the Music Department for an excellent evening of music – we are very proud of the students’ hard work and talent, and we can’t wait for the next concert!
