The Historical Cake Competition is an annual event in which Year 13 History students decorate a cake with any historical event/person of their choosing. The focus is not on tasting the cakes, rather on seeing how participants interpret their chosen topic. This year the standard of entries was extremely high and the choice of topics incredibly varied.
The entries were as follows:
Sasha, Mia, Tofunmi: Sino-Soviet relations in 1958 (the visit of Khrushchev to China – Mao made him go swimming even though Khrushchev could not swim!)
Eleanor and Sophie: The Enigma machine (Britain managed to crack the German code and so could intercept German messages during World War Two.)
Aisling: Introduction of the pineapple into England with particular focus on its status as a luxury item during the 17th century.
Anna and Lizzie: Commemorating the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.
Grace: The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD
Ruth and Olivia: Sino-Soviet relations 1958, the visit of Khrushchev to China.
Even though they all deserved to win a prize, the independent judges selected Anna & Lizzie and Eleanor & Sophie as joint winners. Congratulations!
