Oxford High School GDST eagerly joined the World Book Day celebrations, on Thursday 7th March 2024, with engaging activities designed to ignite a passion for literature and learning among students.
As part of the festivities, students in years 7-11 received £1 book vouchers, courtesy of World Book Day, which they could redeem at any bookshop. This initiative aims to encourage students to explore the diverse world of literature and select a book that captivates their imagination.
In the spirit of creativity and imagination, students across all years were invited to participate in a costume competition, where they could dress up as their favorite literary characters, authors or in any book-themed attire. Those who preferred not to dress up were encouraged to come in an outfit perfect for reading, accompanied by a book they wished to recommend to their peers.
Individual costume winners included Julia A (year 8) for her captivating Medusa ensemble and Amadea H (year 7) for her impressive Inej Ghafa from Six of Crows attire. Group costume winners, including Nadya L, Sophia R, Heather L, Lily S, Sophie M and Sophie D (year 7), wowed judges with their sustainable Alice in Wonderland-themed outfits, while Bonnie H, Maria C, Holly P, Margaux I, and Alice G (year 8) stole the show as the Oompa-Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Every participant received a house point for their efforts and winners earned signed books by guest judge Nikita Gill.
Students in years 9 and 10 had the privilege of welcoming poetry sensation, Nikita Gill, to discuss her YA poetry collection, These Are the Words. The hour-long session included a student Q&A, providing a unique opportunity for young minds to engage with the author and delve deeper into the world of poetry.
