World Book Day 2025 was a truly unforgettable event at Oxford High School, filled with bookish joy, creativity and a special visit from bestselling author Caroline Lawrence!
Students and staff came together from across the school to celebrate the magic of reading. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly Caroline Lawrence’s visit, where she captivated Year 8 with her inspiring talk, Myth, Movies and Storytelling. She delved into the fascinating ways mythology shapes our favourite stories and how films bring these timeless tales to life. Students were enthralled by her insights and had the opportunity to ask their burning questions during an engaging Q&A session.
Following her talk, Caroline held a book signing, where students from all year groups eagerly queued up to get their copies of her books signed. From Pantheon: An Illustrated Handbook to the Greek Gods and Goddesses to the ever-popular Roman Mysteries series, there was a buzz of excitement as students chatted about their favourite books and discussed what they would read next.
The World Book Day Costume Contest was another highlight of the day, with students showcasing their creativity by dressing up as their favourite book characters. From Pirot to Biff, Chip and Kipper, the school was awash with imaginative and thoughtful costumes.
For those who preferred a more low-key way to celebrate, the Bring a Book initiative encouraged students to share their favourite reads with friends and classmates, sparking lively discussions and recommendations.
Students also received their World Book Day token, which could be exchanged for a special £1 book or used as a discount on another title at bookshops across the country.
A huge thank you to everyone who made this year’s World Book Day such a success – especially to Caroline Lawrence for sharing her passion for storytelling with us and Ms McMorrow for organising the activities.
