On Thursday 3rd March, all sorts of book characters came to life as Years 7 & 8 rocked up to school in their best costumes ready for World Book Day!
Our school librarian, Ms Jelaca, organised a range of fun, exciting literacy activities for World Book Day. Dressed up as book characters, the students were able to take part in the book character competition. They also got to enjoy a Book Bonanza Quiz, watched a World Book Day live stream featuring Sir Michael Morpurgo, and participated in the Reading Zone Create a Picture Book competition. There was also a creative writing session and, as an extension, students were able to make their own book trailer!
We spoke to a few Year 8s to hear about how they found World Book Day:
Sarah: “World book day is always fun as we all get to see each other dressed up, and how we go off topic for a day to celebrate books! This year, I dressed up as the Gruffalo, because it is a story that I cherish from when I was younger. I made my mask out of cardboard and paint so that I could enjoy world book day and be eco-friendly. We had a very inspiring workshop about how much detail you could put into a short sentence. We also made our own trailers on a book, and we made ours about Alice in Wonderland. World book day is always something that I enjoy, but this year was the best!”
Kaaviya: “World Book Day was introduced to help young people discover the pleasure of reading and this yearly treat for many (especially myself) comes with an annual costume competition! I dressed up as Matilda from the famous book written by Roald Dahl and the reason I dressed up as Matilda was because Matilda was purely fascinated by books and loves to read all year round. I thought how great it would be to show my love of books through the character I dress up as. Not only this but Matilda showed that women can be heroes too even though she was neglected by her parents, tormented by her headteacher and told numerous times that girls should be seen and not heard but she saw past this and found the light at the end of the tunnel. This represents many girls aspiring to be formidable women in today’s society. Overall I enjoyed all the various tasks set up by the school but the one that stood out for me was the World Book Day workshop because it was an interactive learning experience and a fun activity at the same time.”
Jennifer: “World Book Day was really enjoyable and lively. I especially enjoyed creating book trailers, since it allowed a sense of creativity and imagination. We were also given the opportunity to dress up as a character from a book. It was really exciting to see what other people dressed like and to see their tastes’ in books. The character I dressed up as was Jes from the book ‘Poison Blade’ by Kate Elliot. Out of all the characters I know, I decided to choose Jes because she has such a determined and bold personality. She is a very athletic character since in that fantasy book, she participates in obstacle course competitions, and that is what she does and trains for. In general, I really admire her spirit.”
