Last Thursday, Year 9 took part in an off-timetable careers-focused day.
Many students shadowed a parent at their place of work for the day, gaining experience of a working environment and first-hand insights into their parents’ professions. There’s certainly a wide range of careers represented in our OHS parent body, and students delved into a variety of different industries.
Those students who were unable to accompany a parent to work came into school and enjoyed a programme of careers-focused talks and sessions. These included interview sessions with speakers from different industries including: Argyris Stasinakis, founder of Marine Traffic; Caroline Kukura from Nuffield College; and Megan Thomas from Hinkley Point C. In these sessions, students were able to ask questions about the speakers’ chosen career paths and what their day-to-day experiences look like. They also heard from teams within the school community, including the Catering Team and the Marketing Team, about what their roles involve.
In this week’s PSHCE lesson, students prepared presentations in which they reflected on the day, and we were delighted to hear how insightful and enjoyable our students found the experience –
‘I really enjoyed listening to all of the talks and getting lots of great advice for the future. All of the talks were very informative and interesting and I would love to hear from many of them again.’
‘I had a wonderful and interesting experience at the dental surgery and it was an excellent opportunity to get an insight and understanding about dental healthcare in the UK.’
‘I liked listening to this talk as it is great to know the UK is working towards a greener future. I also found it interesting how many new jobs Hinkley Point C is offering, especially for women.’
