A key part of our Sixth Form Perspectives programme is a focus on the wider world: something we facilitate through a series of lectures for our students from leading academics across the country.
For one such lecture, we were joined (virtually) by Dr Richard Benjamin, Head of the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool and, incidentally, brother to our very own Lorraine from the OHS catering team.
Over the course of the hour, we heard not only about the history of the transatlantic slave trade, but also its lasting impact on the city of Liverpool. This topic, amongst others, is highlighted and explored within the Museum itself, which has a strong focus on contemporary issues relating to the legacy of slavery.
The lecture was thoroughly enjoyed by our Year 13s, a couple of whom requested “more lectures like that” in the future. One of our students, Amy, commented:
The talk was truly enlightening about the colonial past of Britain and its involvement in the transatlantic slave trade. It provoked us all to further educate ourselves on the past of our city and is definitely a step in the right direction!
Thank you for joining us, Dr Benjamin!
