Our Year 8 team romped to victory at the national final of the Kids Lit Quiz in London securing themselves a place at the international final in New Zealand in 2018! The team comprised of Hebe, Sophia, Annabelle and Lucy and were led by our amazing Librarian Mrs Frances Stott.
“The Kids Lit Quiz, is quite simply an annual literature phenomenon that hits the UK shores during November each year. I couldn’t be more proud of the Oxford High School girls. They romped to victory with a first place in the local heat for Oxon and Berks and a team of OHS Year 7 girls took the second place spot. We didn’t know at the time but this was the highest scoring heat out of the 19 taking place around the UK. This clearly stood us in good stead. With such a quick turnaround from winning the heat to competing in the Final the following week the girls immersed themselves in the world of ‘Kids Lit’.
With themed rounds of: Book Titles, Gods and Goddesses, Openings, Authors, and Villains, the competitors really needed a vast all-round literature knowledge. Wayne Mills, quizmaster, crafted the questions very carefully and unpeeled clues within the theme of the round to reveal more information. Teams then buzzed in with their answer and, if wrong, lost a point. Books covered represented all genres, from classics old and new – Watership Down to The Book Of Dust.
Lucy, one of our winning team described it very succinctly! “It’s incredible that you can get to New Zealand by answering questions about books!”
The girls have scooped book and money prizes along the way, but the best prize of all is a trip to New Zealand to take part in the World Final in July 2018. The girls literary knowledge will now need to expand to include our international neighbours.”
