The Importance of Being Earnest

27 May 2022

This week, the OHS community was treated to two exceptional performances of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest.

A satire of Victorian society which emphasises the risible trivialities of life, the play was directed by one of our Sixth Form Drama scholars, Leda, and performed by our very own OHS Year 12 drama company.

Needless to say, all of the students who were involved worked tremendously hard to put on this show, and there’s no doubt it paid off. Performing comedy requires a certain skill, and we saw it in abundance in this production, along with excellent staging, wardrobe, lighting and sound.

From Leda:

“It was certainly a great pleasure being able to direct and perform with such a delightful and eager cast, we all had a lot of fun. Knowing Wilde’s wit, I was confident that this comedy would sell well, and that we, along with the audience, would enjoy ourselves immensely. Every rehearsal, we found new ways to make the performance even more ridiculous and heighten the absurdity; and I am very pleased with the outcome. From performance to lighting, costumes to set design, it has been a most satisfactory journey.”

We would like to extend our congratulations to everyone who was involved in the play, with a special mention going to Leda, as well as our fantastic Drama Department. Thank you for providing two nights of such fun and laughter!
