Sixth Form Engineering Conference

10 November 2022

Our latest Sixth Form Zoom conference was led by Micheala and Grace (Year 13) on the topic of Engineering, with sessions aiming to broaden students’ knowledge on the subject ahead of starting their careers in the field. Schools across the country were invited to join online, with over 250 students from 40 schools attending.

Kaitlin Gilli, a PhD student at the University of Oxford in quantum information and computing, kicked off the conference with a talk on career opportunities in computing. She talked of jobs in multiple fields, including classical and quantum machine learning and how these jobs are often the most creative careers in STEM.

Dr Bernardo Castro Dominguez then followed with an overview of how Chemical Engineering can improve the environment, society, and our development as humans. Alice Atkins then closed the conference with a talk on where her engineering career has taken her and the opportunities she has had.

Students, both at OHS and across the guest schools, also had the opportunity to put their questions to to the guest speakers, asking the speakers more about their careers and fields.
