Shakespeare in Love: A Theatrical Treat from Year 8 & 9

29 January 2025

“I will have poetry in my life. And adventure. And love. Love above all.”

From the moment the curtain rose, our Year 8 and Year 9 students transported the audience to the heart of Elizabethan England with their mesmerising performance of Shakespeare in Love

This ambitious production, adapted for the stage by Lee Hall from the Oscar-winning film by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, tells the story of a young William Shakespeare battling writer’s block – until he finds his muse in the form of Viola De Lesseps. Their forbidden love, entangled with the politics and expectations of the time, ultimately inspires one of the greatest love stories ever written: Romeo and Juliet.

From the witty wordplay to the sweeping romance, every moment on stage was brought to life with passion, energy and extraordinary talent. The cast embodied their characters with confidence, delivering fast-paced dialogue and heartfelt performances that captivated the audience.

The students’ dedication since the start of the Autumn Term shone through in every aspect of the performance. The stunning costumes, atmospheric lighting and carefully choreographed scenes created a truly immersive experience. With music by Paddy Cunneen enhancing the emotional depth of the play, the production was a visual and auditory delight.

A special thank you goes to the incredible team behind the scenes – our drama department, technical crew and everyone involved in set and costume design – who worked tirelessly to make this production a success.

Bravo to our talented performers for bringing poetry, adventure and love to the stage!
