Written by Aarya, Year 13
As part of our A level History course on ‘Russia in revolution’, the Year 13 historians had the opportunity to attend a conference in London to deepen our understanding of the period and challenge us to look at it from a new perspective.
We were treated to a host of fascinating talks from a range of wonderful speakers (some of whom wrote the books that we use in class!), and each one narrowed in on one particular aspect of the period. Topics ranged from Nicholas II to the New Economic Policy, but what they all had in common was that they each brought to light aspects of the course that we had not considered before.
The conference gave us the opportunity to contextualise our understanding and immerse ourselves in revolutionary Russia, and we were presented with interesting ideas and new perspectives at every turn.
We also enjoyed a picnic-style lunch by the River Thames in the shadow of the Houses of Parliament, before a brisk walk back to the bus stop. All in all, we greatly appreciated and very much enjoyed the day. Attending the conference was an intellectually stimulating, highly engaging experience that has left us reflecting on this period of history and its wider contextual importance.
