The learning a girl does in her first year of school is crucial. It is on these strong academic foundations that all her future success is built. For this reason, our curriculum has been designed to balance core skills in literacy and numeracy with a future-ready focus on global studies and a variety of specialised subjects.
Reception Curriculum Overview
Our Reception Curriculum has a core focus on developing secure English and Maths skills. But we are also committed to extending girls’ knowledge and curiosity about everything from the natural world to ancient history. Our ultimate aim is that they will become lifelong learners with a true understanding of the world – an ambition which is consolidated by their subsequent learning in the Prep School.
English and Maths
Our English teaching places children’s literature at its core and discretely, yet creatively, embeds the necessary skills to learn to read and write. We teach our Maths with an emphasis on a depth of mathematical fluency and understanding using the Numicon Scheme. The girls receive daily Phonics, English and Maths input.
A Global Learner
The girls relish our weekly ‘Global Studies’ lessons, where they learn about the culture and language of another country. Moving seamlessly between indoor and outdoor play, cooperative play and quiet concentration, girls learn fundamental principles of collaboration, leadership, language, problem solving and scientific enquiry.
Specialist Teaching
The girls enjoy specialist teaching in weekly lessons of Mandarin, Choir, Music, Games, Swimming (in the Summer term) and Art.
A Logical Progression
Having established firm foundations in their Reception year, the interleaved planning of our curriculum ensures that girls enjoy a seamless and manageable transition into their learning in Years 1 & 2.
