PE and Sport Updates

4 February 2022

It has been an incredibly busy time for PE and Sport at Oxford High over the last two weeks, with the co-curricular sport stealing the limelight. As we have excellent staffing provision here at OHS, the curriculum has been able to run seamlessly alongside all the co-curricular success stories.

Year 7 and 8 have been busy with our U12 and U13 A and B teams playing some excellent hockey and netball against Headington School, with wins and losses in equal measure. Our U13 A and B cricket teams have also competed in the Lady Taverners Indoor Cricket Competition, finishing 3rd and relishing the opportunity to play in their first indoor tournament since being at OHS. Our U15A and B cricket teams showed their experience and talent in their Lady Taverners Competition with both teams advancing to the County Finals in March.

Our football teams have also been competing lots with our U14 team narrowly losing 4-3 in the first round of the National Cup and our U15 team winning 8-2 against Ardingly College in the third round of the National Cup. Our U18 team travelled all the way to Ipswich to play St Joseph’s College in the quarter final of the National Cup, with a 5-0 loss after a tough fought game. A 3-1 loss would have perhaps been a fairer result, but all credit to St Joseph’s, previous National Cup winners, who pushed us all the way. The U18s played outstandingly well – sometimes you are just beaten by a better team. We are so proud of all they gave to the school on that day – an 8 hour round trip and a tough football fixture, topped of with a McDonald’s on the way home! Quarter finals of the National Cup is something to be very proud of!

Our U16 netball team had an absolutely incredible day at the Regional Finals, topping their group after an outstanding play in the group stages, only losing one game. They found themselves up against Wellington College in the semi-finals, and couldn’t quite overcome them unfortunately, but with Wellington going on to win the whole competition it seems we perhaps had the harder semi-final with the team we beat in the group going on to win their semi-final. That’s how sport goes sometimes and we couldn’t be prouder of the efforts and performances from the team all day – the furthest an OHS netball has ever got. Here’s hoping they’ll go one better next year! The U16 netball team also travelled away to Rugby School in the National Cup, winning a tight game, to advance to the quarter final of the National Cup so there is still that to play – exciting!

We also took our swimming teams to the GDST Rally in Guildford where the U14s and O14s competed in lots of races throughout the day. The U14 team all made their individual finals respectively with Hazel going on to win the final – incredible work!

And our last bit of news, but by no means least, our cross country team competed in the County Championships with all runners finishing in the top 20, and Emily and Poppy finishing 7th and 12th therefore gaining a place on the Oxfordshire County Team.

It’s been an incredible time for all things co-curricular sport-related and we are so proud of all our students who give up the time and work so hard to represent Oxford High School, whether it be in friendly inclusive fixtures or county, regional or national competitions. We are also proud to keep an excellent PE curriculum going, with a broad and balanced offer for all our students at all times.

Looking ahead to the week ahead, kicking off with the U18 hockey team competing in the National Finals on Monday 7th – good luck to them!
