Oxfordshire Youth Chemistry Conference

10 December 2021

The Oxfordshire Youth Chemistry Conference, held at Wychwood School, had the topical theme this year of ‘Climate Chemistry’. This gave the pupils an experience of a conference-like setting, with students either choosing to present a poster or give a talk on an element of their choice.

A wonderful talk about the role of superconductors in helping to solve our energy issues kickstarted the event, which was an opportunity for pupils to gain some insight into what a scientific conference would be like. Bea, Hajira, and Ruby (all in Year 10) presented a highly commended poster on ‘Problems facing the climate due to the agricultural industry’. Sidra (Year 10) spoke eloquently and passionately about ‘Understanding the link between chemistry and the climate’. Jess and Naomi (Year 12) gave a unique perspective on the ‘Prevention of Coral Bleaching’, including current research on how to prevent this.

“I enjoyed coming together with other young people from Oxfordshire to share ideas about the future of our climate. It was reassuring to see how many people were passionate about changing the way in which we live for the betterment of the planet.” – Naomi

“I enjoyed listening to everyone’s interesting talks and especially enjoyed the one on biodiversity.” – Sidra

A huge well done to our six students for stepping outside of their comfort zone and delivering articulate, well thought-out presentations, and congratulations to Sidra, Jess, and Naomi who were awarded prizes for being the ‘Most Inspiring Speakers’ at the conference!
