Our Student-led Sustainability Conference

5 March 2025

Written by Amy, Year 12

On the 24th of March I am running a Sustainable Technology Conference, which will cover some wide ranging topics around this area. I started work on this before Christmas, it took a while to pull everything together, but now I have I am so excited for the event later this month.

The conference is open to all sixth forms across the country and we have just over 1000 students who will be joining the event online. I contacted people that I’ve seen on social media, some authors of books I’ve read and some contacts I made during work experience; now I have some fantastic speakers lined up to share their knowledge and expertise:

● Lucy Yu, CEO of Octopus Energy’s Centre for Net Zero – she will talk about Centre for Net Zero’s main areas of work including designing and running field trials, publishing academic papers and policies as well as developing AI-based models to advance the energy transition.
● Professor Alexander Forse, Cambridge University – he will be sharing his research into Sustainable and Fast Charging Energy Storage Systems.
● Professor Mark Miodownik, UCL – he will be sharing his research into Animate Materials.
● Dr Eseosa Ekanem, UK Atomic Energy Authority – she will talk about the Sustainable use of Tritium.
● Anna Stukas, Vice President of One Point Five – she will talk about the work One Point Five is carrying out to develop Direct Air Capture systems and Sustainable Aviation Fuel

I have really enjoyed organising this conference so far, since sustainability is a very important issue to me. I am also passionate about the application of STEM to find the solutions that will help us combat climate challenges. I am really looking forward to hearing all the speakers’ talks and I hope that students will find this event engaging and informative.
