One Day Film School

3 May 2023

Year 9 pupils put their filmmaking skills to the test, on Tuesday 2nd May, at the One Day Film School.

In the morning, they learned the basics of filmmaking, giving them the essential skills to make their own film later in the day. They learnt fight choreography by analysing James Bond fight scenes, discovered the three things every script needs and practised how to shoot and edit their film on an iPad.

In the afternoon, students took the 10 Shot Challenge: creating a short film (2 minutes maximum) based on a classic narrative (eg. Someone is kidnapped and an attempted rescue) for premiering at the end of the day. Each student took on a role within their film crew (writer, director, producer, screenwriter and actor) to create their film in only 90 minutes.

Each group performed well, showing leadership and teamwork skills, producing a short film to premier at the OHS Oscars. Everybody enjoyed some popcorn while watching the films for the first time.

The judges, Mrs Gardiner Legge and the Young Film Academy team, then had the difficult task of deciding which film would take home the Best Picture Oscar. As the standard and quality of the films was so high, the judges decided to award two additional ‘runner up’ prizes to ‘Mission Infiltration’ and ‘The Hushing’.

The Best Picture Oscar was ultimately awarded to ‘Memories’, which told an engaging, entertaining story and was technically superb: the judges were particularly impressed by the excellent performances and high standard of camerawork, editing and sound design.

Congratulations to the winning team! We hope to see our talented Year 9 students at the real Oscars in the future!
