Over the summer, whilst most of us were sitting on the sofa and eating banana bread, our Year 12 A Level German students were busy preparing an entry for Oekoropa, a Europe-wide competition offered by the Goethe-Institut.
In order to enter the competition, the group was required to:
- Develop a detailed plan for an environmentally friendly tour through Europe, visiting the trio capitals of the EU Council Presidency
- Develop a communication strategy for making the journey sustainable as well as encouraging reflections on sustainability
The girls were delighted to win one of five ‘fast developer prizes’, earning €5,000 to spend on sustainability at OHS. After some discussion and deliberation, the group decided to put the money towards what has been dubbed ‘all around the apple’ – a new project which will involve planting and growing apple trees, making and selling produce (such as juice and jam), and using the proceeds to finance more sustainable projects around the school.
A huge congratulations to Eleanor, Lizzie, Lili and Amy on this fantastic achievement!
And for any of our German-speaking readers, here is the group’s competition video –
