Neurodiversity Week 2023

13 March 2023

Written by Maya, Year 11

On Monday 6th March 2023, a group of students from Years 11, 12 and 13 met to plan an assembly commemorating Neurodiversity Week, a week-long event from Monday March 13th to Sunday 19th March 2023. This event celebrates and raises awareness of neurodivergence, specifically promoting the acceptance and inclusion of neurodivergent individuals and challenging the stigma and discrimination that they face in day-to-day life.

In assembly, we discussed the impact of autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and OCD in our lives – they are all natural variations in the human brain so should be recognised and respected as such. Additionally, it is essential that access arrangements are made to level the playing field in education.

However, it is equally important in a society which places such an emphasis on labels, that we do not base our entire identity on a diagnosis or exclude anyone on that basis, but rather embrace the differences between us as human beings. Luckily, this is something that Oxford High School is particularly known for and actively encourages.
