This term, so far, has been a vibrant one for music at Oxford High School, with a series of fantastic events showcasing the diverse talents of our student musicians. From intimate solo performances to grand ensemble concerts, our students have embraced the chance to perform, collaborate and celebrate music in all its forms.
Solo Showcase
This first students’ musical event of the term, in mid October, was a new venture, designed to give performance opportunities to soloists and small group performers at a high level. An amazing twenty-six students took part.
We were treated to a wide range of music from four centuries and across many different instruments and styles, including two songs performed by their composers, Jaci and Lisa, accompanying themselves on guitar and piano respectively. The music of Chappell Roan, Fanny Mendelssohn, Amy Beach and Cécile Chaminade was also performed, showing that female composers are becoming more and more mainstream.
Senior Concert at St Barnabas’ church
Last week’s concert at St Barnabas’ church in Jericho was a fabulous event. If you missed it there will be further opportunities in this academic year to hear these players and singers. We heard the concert band, the flute ensemble, the string orchestra, the senior chamber choir (Schola Cantorum), the big band (Funkem Maximam), the senior orchestra and the senior choir. The final piece of the evening comprised six movements from Haydn’s ‘Nelson’ mass, sending us home on a wave of wonderful sound. The concert was a great experience for peformers and audience alike.
