On Wednesday 11th January 2023, the Hortensia Club organised a brilliant guest lecture from Professor Dominic Brookshaw, University of Oxford.
His though-provoking talk explored the driving force behind the anti-regime protests in Iran. Professor Brookshaw showed how literature and poetry can offer a window into contemporary Iranian society, uncovering the deep history behind the Iranian citizens demanding justice and gender equality.
Brookshaw is a Professor of Persian Literature and Iranian Culture at the University of Oxford and Senior Research Fellow in Persian at Wadham College. His most recent book, Hafiz and His Contemporaries: poetry, performance and patronage in fourteenth century Iran, won the Saidi-Sirjani Book Award in 2022.
