#LifeLunch: Kirstie Selfe, Tribal Textiles

15 September 2023

The first #LifeLunch of this academic year was delivered by Kirstie Selfe, a creative entrepreneur from Zambia. She owns and runs Tribal Textiles, a sustainable, ethical home decor company.

Kirstie inspired students with insights into her creativity, work in the heart of the Zambian wilderness and her community outreach. All designs at Tribal Textiles draw inspiration from the landscape and animals in Africa, often reinterpreting traditional patterns.

Students were keen to know more about the printing process, using starch and natural inks to create the designs. They were also interested by the outreach work Tribal Textiles gets involved in locally. They reinvest 5% of each purchase into local community development and conservation projects and in Zambia.

Kirstie’s talk ended with some fantastic advice for anyone pursuing creativity or wanting to own their own business: “Think outside of the box, be resilient, have a sense of adventure!”

We were absolutely delighted to welcome Kirstie Selfe for the first in our series of Life Lunch talks. The talks aim to inspire and inform our pupils about the amazing range of opportunities beyond school, and perhaps shine a light on paths less travelled. Kirstie spoke with passion and joy about her life in Zambia, where she runs a sustainable, ethical Textiles business in the heart of the Zambian bush.

Coming up later this term, we have more fabulous speakers including an Architect, an Earth Scientist and a Professor of Mechanical Engineering.  Ms Heath, Head of Careers and Lifelong Education
