Year 2 were celebrating Hinamatsuri Day this week. To those who might need a little prompting on Japanese traditional festivals, this is an annual festival in Japan also known as ‘Dolls Day’ or ‘Girls Day’.
This worked very well to combine our Year 2 Global Studies on Japan this term as well as our love for celebrating every thing and anything we can at OHS.
Traditionally, Platforms covered with a red carpet–material are used to display a set of ornamental dolls (雛人形, hina-ningyō) these represent the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period.
We were very kindly lent traditional dolls from our local friends in Oxfordshire as well as artwork, fashion items and of course delicious Japanese sweeties. The pupils were able to show their parents everything they have learnt so far in Global Studies!
