Gold CREST Award

10 June 2022

We are delighted to announce that Year 11 students Ahyoung, Anjali, Trisha, Sara and Apsara have been awarded a prestigious Gold CREST award, for their project investigating alternatives to ethanol in hand sanitiser.

CREST is a nationally recognised scheme for student-led project work in the STEM subjects, and it has been designed to give participants the creative freedom to explore a topic of their choosing.

We spoke to the group to find out more about their experience of CREST –

“We thoroughly enjoyed carrying out our CREST Award project, which taught us skills such as problem solving, teamwork and perseverance. For our project, we conducted extensive research into whether there is a better alternative to ethanol in hand sanitiser, since we all considered this an interesting and topical line of enquiry. We had to take a range of different factors into consideration, including the environment, manufacturing processes and health risks, as well as experimental methods such as aseptic technique. Despite encountering difficulties due to the lockdown during the early stages of our project, we managed to push through and complete the award. We not only developed our experimental skills, but also learnt about efficient time-management and organisation.

We highly recommend doing this award if you enjoy science, working together with your friends and learning new skills!”

Congratulations on this exceptional achievement Ahyoung, Anjali, Trisha, Sara and Apsara – we’re so proud of you!
