German Brought to the Prep

9 July 2025

Written by Poppy, Year 10

Year 10 had a great experience teaching the Year 3s at the Prep School this June. The two groups were responsible for making an interactive lesson for the Year 3s to introduce the majority of them to the language.

The first group made a great presentation, with the Year 3s taking part in a memory picture game of German foods, where they showed clear understanding of the topics. As well as later learning their favourite animals. Their presentation was a success, with a room filled with eager hands wanting to answer questions or try speaking.

The second group followed with a new class, starting with learning how to introduce themselves and have basic conversations with one another. We were astonished to hear the skill of some of the Year 3s’ German prior to the lesson, with many of them able to assist us with examples and some even brought resources to help them in the lesson.

We played a game of Guess Who, trying to describe the appearance of characters with their new knowledge. Some needed assistance at first, but they quickly picked it up and helped one another solve the problems.

To end the day, we played a—albeit quite confusing to learn—game involving dice; however, they seemed to enjoy it and got very competitive with one another, showing their new abilities.

The Year 10s, from both groups, worked together to help at different tables, and it was a lovely way to meet some future linguists and practice our German!
