FIRST Tech Robotics

11 May 2023

On 27th April, our team, Cubotics, made up of students from Year 10 and Year 12, made their way to London to attend a regional meet up, or ‘scrimmage’, for the FIRST Tech Challenge.

The FIRST Tech Challenge is a global competition for those in Year 7-13 interested in coding and robotics. Every year teams have to create and programme a robot to compete in the competition. Every year the challenge changes – this year the challenge was to stack cones on top of poles. The competition encourages collaboration and teamwork amongst existing teams and with other teams. There are scrimmages in which teams can meet-up, share ideas and work together.

The team started creating their robot in January, after joining the competition in November 2022. As the first OHS team, they created a robot from scratch. They learned to work as a team, with each of them taking leads on different elements of the robot, such as the build, the coding and the design.

At the Scrimmage, our team were happy to see the robot move around the course, especially as we had only successfully tested it a few days earlier! From this experience they came up with ideas as to how to develop and improve the robot. The atmosphere was great. Our team received a claw grabber as a gift from another all-girls team, so we’re looking forward to incorporating into our design.

The team will be next competing in Cambridge on the 23rd June. Follow us on Instagram @cub._.tics to see how they get on!
