Last Thursday, Team Cubotics, consisting of new members from Year 10, travelled to Harris Academy Sutton for the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics scrimmage. This event provided an opportunity to try out their robot in the real game field and gain valuable insights into the rigours of the competition.
As last year, the competition consists of an initial 30 seconds of autonomous action, where the robot has to carry out a selection of tasks without any interaction from a human. This is then followed by 2 minutes of driver-controlled action, which mainly involves placing game pieces at particular positions in the game, and then ends with the robot suspending itself from a gantry and launching a drone beyond the game field.
Their robot immediately drew interest from other teams due to its innovative mecanum wheels which enabled it to move sideways, providing strategic advantage during the competition. The team was also able to network with other teams and look at their ideas. They returned to school with renewed enthusiasm and focus to develop the robot further, aiming to tackle the full range of challenges posed by the competition.
