Written by Year 12 Greek students
On Wednesday 9th February, Year 10, 12 and 13 Greekies boarded a coach and set off for London.
The grimness of the rainy afternoon was soon overcome, as we had the delight of eating authentic Greek food at The Real Greek restaurant in Soho. The menu was extensive and we were utterly spoiled for choice, but managed to pick out some fantastic dishes (which only Dr K was able to pronounce correctly!). We even had (just) enough space for dessert – the baklava was a hit!
Full up from our meal, we walked over to the Bloomsbury Theatre at UCL to watch a student-led performance of Euripides’ Electra. The production was an interesting comedic take on this famous tragedy, making it more suitable and definitely more entertaining for a modern audience, without losing the essence of the original tragedy. The acting was incredible, with the leads – Electra and her brother Orestes – each having their own distinct and memorable characteristics. The character of Pylades served to provide some comic relief, while Clytemnestra dominated the stage as the imposing queen of Argos.
Overall it was a hugely enjoyable experience – we hope we can attend more performances like this in the future!
