The Department is headed by Mr M Gallacher (HoD) FT who started teaching at Oxford High School in 1993 as his first full-time teaching post. Students study Economics in the sixth form and it is a popular option with an average of 15-20 students studying it in each year.

Students study micro and macroeconomics at AS and A2 level, considering topics as diverse as demand and supply, market failure, Business Economics, inflation and the single currency. It is assessed with short answers, data response questions and essays.

There are plenty of opportunities for enrichment including an Economics magazine that the students write and edit and the flourishing Economics Society which invites leading economists into school. Students also have entered the IFS Student Investor Challenge where they have tracked and tried to predict share prices of leading shares.

Foreign trips have taken place to New York and Washington where students have visited the United Nations, the Federal Reserve Bank, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Students have said the following:

“This trip has been really fun and so interesting. I had never been to America before and this has really opened my eyes.”

“Definitely a trip to remember and I really want to come back soon.”

“A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

There are also visits to Europe including to Prague, Frankfurt, Luxembourg, Barcelona, Brussels and Strasbourg. Visits to Brussels include a vegetable and fruit auction, Coca Cola, a chocolate factory, a car plant and the National Bank of Belgium. Students have said the following about recent trips:

“The trip was both educational and enjoyable; that’s what made it both memorable and worthwhile for me.”

“I really enjoyed the visits and I really mean it. It was a bit like going round seeing places I would love to work. It has really motivated me to be passionate about Economics and languages.”
