Drama at the Campsite: Year 8 and 9 German play Experience

25 March 2025

Written by Siri, Year 8

On Wednesday we saw a German play called In den Campingplatz or At the campsite. It’s about two friends, Sonja and Katharina, who go on a camping trip. While Katharina is an experienced camper, Sonja has never been before, and when they realise that neither thought to bring food tensions start to boil over. The play was entirely in German.

It wasn’t just my German class – there was the Year 9 German class as well as pupils from Cheney and Abingdon schools. Everyone in the audience was doing German as a language at school.

The play was very good because it was entertaining and although there were lots of words I didn’t know I was able to make sense of the storyline – and there were many funny bits, like the interactions with the neighbouring campers, and entertaining parts, like when Snuggles was beheaded and Sonja’s shoe got its heel pulled off.

The play starts at the train station, when Katharina is amazed at the amount of stuff Sonja brings – her numerous suitcases are filled with things ranging from handbags to hairdryers. Then they get to the campsite before realising they have brought no food – at least, that’s what they first think, for what neither know is that Sonja has a can of Pringles – and when that can is discovered by Sonja the arguments come to a head. When Katharina breaks into Sonja’s tent and finishes the pringles, Sonja beheads her soft toy, Snuggles, and Katharina in turn rips the heel off her shoe. After this climax, the pair learn that there is a bus going from the campsite home, apologise for breaking each other’s things, and the play ends on a happy note.

Overall, this play is highly recommended for its humour and the fact that it is easy to understand. Bye for now!
