Dr Anne Knowland started her academic career as a Lecturer in Modern English Literature at the University of Ghent, Belgium, where she obtained a BA in Germanic Philology. She came to Oxford an a British Council Fellow and studied for her D.Phil in English at Linacre College, while also raising two children, Sara (who was a pupil at OHS between 1990 and 2000), and Nicholas (who went to MCS, during the tenure of Andrew Halls, now his boss at KCS Wimbledon). She joined the Academic Division of the University’s Central Administration while the children were small, and held a wide range of posts. In 2000, she became the first Divisional Secretary (Head of Administration) of the newly established Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division. She was appointed as full-time Senior Tutor and Tutor for Admissions at University College in 2004, and took slightly early retirement from that post in October 2015 to pursue her many interests in academia and the arts.
