Each year, Oxford High School forms a Year 10 Company to shadow the UK National Theatre Connections programme. Like There’s No Tomorrow is a testament to this tradition as one of the pioneering National Theatre Connections plays crafted by young talents.
The Story
Set against the backdrop of a world plagued by strange cracks and environmental degradation, the play delves into the lives of individuals grappling with the consequences. While the mayoral candidate promises abundance, Maru struggles to breathe amidst the chaos. Through powerful storytelling and compelling performances, the production sheds light on the plight of climate refugees and the urgent need for action.
A Tale of Collaboration
Directed by Ms Bramall, the play emerges from the collaborative efforts of students who inject their ideas and creativity into the narrative. The cast seamlessly transitioned between multiple roles, infusing the production with energy and authenticity.
The technical crew faced challenges in creating a vivid auditory and visual landscape. With over 60 cues, they masterfully evoked the tensions of suburban life and the eerie atmosphere of environmental decay.
“I’ve learnt a lot about tech during the production of the play, such as sampling sound effects and creating sound effects on QLab, with Simran, Hayley and Mr Hay, as well as layering videos and pictures to underscore the scene changes and emphasise the message of climate change within the play. I also learnt how to edit effects and cue sounds to create the right atmospheres for certain moments.” Chellisa, Year 10
Beyond the Stage
Each performance collected donations for ‘Just One Tree’, a charity committed to planting trees to restore ecosystems and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The Drama Department has supported this organisation all year and has raised over £500, meaning over 500 trees have been planted.
