Today, at lunch, students in Years 7-9 gathered in the Lecture Theatre for a student-led charity quiz. Expertly organised by Amy (Year 9), the event was held in order to raise funds for the DEC Humanitarian Appeal in Ukraine.
Many teams came together in a bid to win one of the prizes on offer, as well as to simply enjoy some lighthearted end-of-term fun!
We spoke to Amy, the quiz organiser, to find out what motivated her to organise this event:
“I was absolutely horrified, as was everyone, when I first heard about the war in Ukraine. After speaking to one of my Dad’s friends, who is helping Ukrainian refugees in Poland, I knew that I wanted to do something to help. I had already been thinking about running a charity event at some point so I thought now was the perfect time to do so. I thought running a quiz to raise money for charity would be a fun option, especially as I enjoy going to quiz club on Tuesday lunchtimes. I decided to fundraise for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) as they work with lots of smaller charities helping in Ukraine and distribute the money they raise where appropriate. I also chose the DEC as whatever amount of money they raise the government will double. I had asked Mrs Townend, who runs quiz club, if it would be possible to have some help in organising the quiz and from then on it was all systems go. It is actually really enjoyable organising a charity event. The best part is seeing your posters up around school! It was quite a bit of work advertising, and making the quiz but it was very much worth it in the end. Mrs Townend has been so helpful in putting up posters and getting together a staff team. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to support Ukraine and run a school event. It has been a really incredible experience.”
A huge thank you to everyone who attended, with a special ‘well done’ to Amy for organising such a fantastic event!
