CERN Trip

19 October 2023

Written by Ms Rhodes, Physics Teacher

Between Thursday 19th and Friday 20th of October we had a whistle-stop tour of Geneva and the CERN site (the European Council for Nuclear Research). Despite a very early start and lots of rain, we were in good spirits and thoroughly enjoyed our visits to the wild taxidermy in the Natural History Museum and the hands-on exhibits in the Museum of the History of Science.

After a brisk walk to see the sights of Geneva, a Physics quiz rounded off our first day, before we sank gratefully into bed.

On Friday, we spent the day on the CERN site. Our visit included a deep journey underground to visit the CMS detector, followed by lunch in the cafeteria with the scientists and engineers, and an afternoon in the newly opened visitor centre with lots of interesting exhibits and hands-on activities.
