Earlier this term, our Year 12 Drama students travelled to London see the production of Burnt City, by Punchdrunk. Here is a pupil’s view, written by Grace:
“On the 14th of September the year 12 drama students went to see Punchdrunk’s ‘The Burnt City’. We began by travelling by train from Oxford to Paddington station before getting the Elizabeth Line to Woolwich. I found it very exciting travelling on the Elizabeth Line for the first time.
The set location was very dramatic, we entered into a bar scene draped in red and filled with smoke and sat in anticipation for the show. Punchdrunk’s ‘The Burnt City’ is a large-scale work of immersive theatre, pioneering experimental drama. It involved a masked audience exploring an intricate set of Troy, with many rooms, the set was like a maze in nature. The intense story was portrayed through music, dancing, dialogue and song. Audience members were invited to roam the rooms as they pleased, choosing their own path through the story. I found the disjointed storylines left me bewildered, only adding to the intensity of the piece.
